Did you recently dye your hair?

Hair breakage is very common when you dye your hair, especially if you bleach your hair. Anytime you dye your hair, you’re going to damage it and irritate your scalp to some degree. No matter how gentle your hair dye claims to be, there’s going to be some sort of damage, breakage and hair fall.

Your hair is  going to be extremely dry if you bleach it no matter what. Bleach / peroxide strips the hair melanin from the hair and strips the natural hair oils from you hair during the process. When your hair is very dry, it’s prone to breaking and falling out.

You can try synthetic products to moisturize your hair and scalp but they can lead to further damage, head breakage, hair shedding, and irritation to your scalp.

Dyed hair remedy – Try this How to Stop Your Hair from Breaking and Falling Out:

  1. Make sure you throughly rinsed all the bleach and peroxide out of your hair and scalp with warm water.
  2. Blot excess water from hair, when hair is dry or damp apply olive oil to your hair and scalp.
  3. Completely saturate your hair and scalp and leave it on for at least three hours.
  4. wrap your hair into a warm towel or shower cap to keep your hair warm for absorbing the olive oil
  5. after at least 3 hours, rinse your hair with warm water only. Allow your hair to dry naturally.
  6. You should now have stronger hair that won’t break and a healthy scalp.

Do you have a dry or itchy scalp?

If you have an itchy dry scalp and notice lots of hair breaking and hair falling out in your hair brush, don’t worry. This is easy to fix. It’s a combination of having a fatty acid deficiency in your diet and you’re lacking your natural protective scalp oils.

You could also have dandruff. If this sounds like you, you need to improve your diet by adding healthy fats to your diet. Also, providing soothing natural oils to your scalp and hair. You need to use natural oils at full strength to your hair.

Don’t use synthetic hair products on your scalp if it’s dry and itchy. This could lead to more irritation, dryness, flakes, dandruff, itching, and more hair falling out as well as hair breakage.

Why? Because your scalp omits natural oils as a protective skin barrier and keeps the hair follicle plump and protected. When your scalp is dry and irritated, your hair will most likely begin to fall out.

Dry itchy scalp remedy – Try this How to Stop Your Hair from Breaking and Falling Out:

  1. Add tablespoon of raw uncooked extra virgin olive oil to your diet. Try adding it to your salads, sandwiches, pasta, etc.
  2. Apply olive oil to your hair and scalp exactly as mentioned in the remedy above for dyed hair.

Did you recently switch shampoos or conditioner?

If you have recently switched to a new shampoo and conditioner and notice your hair is breaking and falling out, you could have an allergic reaction to a new ingredient. It’s scary when you lose a lot of hair in the shower or see a lot of hair in your drain.

Not all shampoos are right for your hair. You could also be shampooing your hair too often, leading to dry brittle hair and scalp irritation. You should switch back to your prior shampoo asap.

I personally recommend using a sulfate free shampoo. I have my favorite here on my favorite beauty items page.

shampoo switch remedy – Try this How to Stop Your Hair from Breaking and Falling Out:

Make sure your shampoo does not have sodium laureate sulfate in the ingredients. That can be a leading cause of hair loss. (source: Livestrong.com) “no poo” method helps your scalp regain natural moisture and build strong roots. A new conditioner could also lead to clogging the pores in your scalp, leading to irritation and possibly hair falling out.

However, sometimes when you use a new conditioner and notice excessive hair falling out, it could mean the conditioner is helping smooth your hair so much that older hair that shed days ago is finally being “combed” out during the rinse process.

I remember once I kept my hair tied back during a rough time in my life for over one week. I didn’t wash my hair or comb it and when I finally washed and combed my hair, tons of hair shed out. It seriously scared me, but it’s normal to shed on average of 50 – 100 hair per day. (source: aad.org)

Do you wash you hair with hot water?

Did you know washing your hair in hot water strips your hair and scalp of natural oils? When your hair is weak and dry and your scalp is irritated, your hair falls out and your hair gets excessively dry and prone to breakage.

Be sure to only use warm or cold water on your hair. It’s also said that if your shower or bath makes the bathroom mirror steam it means your water is too hot.

If you want to restore the moisture and strength to your hair, please follow the 5 steps as mentioned above to prevent hair from breaking and falling out. Hot water is bad for your skin and also bad for your hair.

Are your flat ironing your hair?

Flat ironing your hair can lead to hair breakage no matter which leave in heat protecting product you’re using. It’s insanely crucial not using a flat iron every day, especially if your hair is bleached or color treated.

If you’re addicted to using a flat iron, at least allow your hair to dry naturally after washing it and use the olive oil treatment mentioned many times above. Use this treatment at least once a week to help stop your hair from breaking and falling out naturally.

I also recommend that you start using a boar bristle brush. These brushes help evenly distribute the natural oils from your scalp to the end of your hair. The result? Stronger hair and more shiny hair for a bonus!

Did you more to a new country or state?

Many of my friends have told me that when they moved to another country , their hair started falling out. It can take up to six months for your body to get used to a new climate. Many of my friends have experienced this problem, have you? All you can really do is wait it out with patience. Your body will slowly adjust to the change.

Do you have excessive hair fall? Did you become vegan or vegitarian?

Many of my friends that have switched to a vegan or vegetarian life style have noticed excessive hair fall out. This can be from a lack or iron normal found in red meat. If you’re not taking a supplement, you can become anemic and start to look very pale or sickly. If you’re going vegan or vegetarian, do it right and research – plan your meals properly.

Other common causes why your hair is breaking and falling out:

  • Taking a new medication
  • Being pregnant / having a baby
  • Trauma
  • Losing a lot of weight quickly
  • Birth control pills
  • Stress
  • Fever
  • Pulling your hair
  • Hereditary
  • Male pattern baldness
  • Wearing wigs
  • Dirty scalp
  • Tight ponytails, braids, weaves
  • Wearing the same hair part

      1. Hey!
Does using olive oil make your hair thicker my hair isn’t nessaserly breaking it has just got a lot thinner over the months if not do you know how I can get my hair back thicker the way it was ( I have bleached my hair but not excessively and had months in between doing so) thanks

        1. Hi Christieee, It may seem like olive oil make your hair thicker. When your hair is nice and moisturized with rich fatty acids, your hair will plump up with strength. It’s possible. I would get your hair back to feeling thick before dying again.
          Jen XO

    1. do you have the brand name for olive oil? is this cooking olive oil you talking about? where can i buy? when i comb my hair, my hair fall excessive and even when I sit or stand i just use my hand wrap my hair down.

  1. Raw egg DOES work to strengthen your hair from breakage. I just take 2 raw eggs and mix them with my shampoo. Cover your head with a shower cap and wait for 30 minutes before rinsing the mixture off with lukewarm water and a gentle shampoo. It is a bit gross and mess but it does work.

I used to have breakage all the time, but I changed two things and now I dont get breakage: (1) I started using the Egg method I mentioned above, and (2) I now ALWAYS use the Shielo Leave in Protectant right when I get out of the shower. It makes my hair smell GREAT and it protects my hair from heat. NO MORE BREAKAGE FROM THESE TWO METHODS.

    1. Yes, raw eggs are awesome. Thank you for sharing. Always be careful not to use hot water when rinsing the eggs, it can accidentally “cook” the eggs and leave little rubbery cooked egg pieces in the hair. (very hard to get out) I did that mistake once back in high school. lol

  2. Love your tips, love your website! Quick question: after I put the olive oil in my hair and leave it in my hair for a few hours, I rinsed it out, it’s still greasy. Should I have used conditioner to get it out or is it okay as it is? Thanks 🙂

  3. Hi there. My hair is falling out . I got my hair bleeched from hairdresser an now its all falling out really bad when I brush or pull a little . I’m so crushed . my hair was down to my butt an now its nearly passed my shoulders ???? Heeelp !!

  4. This is my big problem at first, but thank goodness, I am able to get a solution to it before everything get worst. I am glad that some of your tips and advice are what I am using also. Thanks a lot for sharing it. It’s a big thing for beauty enthusiast like me.

  5. Hi there. My hair has recently started to fall out and I can’t determine the cause from the reasons you listed in your post. Does your hair change in texture when it breaks and falls out? My hair is now very fragile, frizzy, and tangles easily. It feels like straw at times and at other times so fine and soft it will disappear. It is like I have completely different hair overnight. How do I turn this around so that I can stop my hair from falling out? I am heartbroken and embarrassed and I want my normal hair back. Please help!!

  6. Hi,
I am experiencing a lot hair fall from last 6 months due to hair breakage. Also my hair is very thin and dry. Plzz help! Which shampoo and conditioner will be helpful ? Or any other way to get rid of hair breakage and dry hair.

      1. SadButTrue#Metallica

I used a sulfur-based conditioner after peroxiding my hair…… lots of color loss. So was the sulfur-based conditioner responsible for my hair color loss???

        1. Not sure what you mean, you think the conditioner helped you bleach your hair faster? Usually, the more prone and less oils and hair conditioner you use prior, the more effective hair bleaching will work.

  7. please help me! iv just bleached my hair and its falling out in clumps and if i just pull on one hair a little it comes strait out. I’m scared I’m going to turn bald!

Iv got olive oil in my hair and iv got a plastic bag over my head and I’m planning to leave it on for three hours or so. the individual hairs look so thin do you think they will go thicker any time soon? I’m scared to touch it incase it all comes out!

    1. Hi Sarah,
I’m sad to hear what you’re dealing with. Perhaps the bleach was left too long on your scalp? You should always avoid making contact with your skin. Always leave a tiny part of your root unbleached (although I know it’s so hard) Also always make sure your hair is not freshly washed before bleaching, always bleach day old hair. So your scalp oils can help protect your hair and skin. Yes, use the olive oil. Fingers crosses. Don’t blow dry your hair!
      XO Jen

  8. Plz, my hair is still a virgin hair but it has no strength and always falling off…. I went to make my hair today and was advised by the hairstylist never to think of putting relaxer on the hair because everything will just fall off if I do…. Plz help me…. Am just worried.

    1. Hi Mary,
Relaxer causes a lot of damage. Especially if you try to relax chemically treated/bleached hair. She’s right, stay away from using relaxer. You can strengthen your hair using deep conditioners regularly, even using coconut or olive oil.
      Jen

  9. thank you advise of olive oil i also got falling hair because i did dye my hair.i didn’t know that dye is not good.
    thanks martha mokadi.

  10. Yesterday I had my hair highlighted as I do every 6 to 8 weeks. Never had this problem before. When my stylists went to take foil out and while rinsing strands of hair was coming out. What I’m asking could she have left bleach on to long???

    1. Hi Theresa,
First of all, you should not constantly re apply beach where you previously applied it. This will make the strands of hair thinner and thinner with each bleaching until it breaks. You hair dresser should only apply on the new hair growth.
So sorry to hear. Yes, this can also happen if bleach is left on too long.

  11. What kind of olive oil do I put in my hair? Just any kind of uncooked oil or is there a specific kind that is meant to treat hair?

  12. Hello! My hairs are going through a trauma right now, I chemically damaged them by trying straightening at home. They are brittle & breaking off with every wash/comb. I’ve invested in good shampoos conditioners but all these will take time & my hairs are getting thinner & thinner by day. Please help what should I do?!

    1. Hi Lara,
I recommend you moisturize with olive oil. Saturate your hair and scalp. Leave in for at least a few hours. Wash with sulfate free shampoo. When dries, spray infusion 23 leave in conditioner into your hair and gently comb. Spray lightly and Comb this evenly until it dries or the proteins will harden and make hair crunchy.

  13. I have naturally curly hair and if I don’t brush it wet i get the fly aways. It’s really ugly. But my hair has breaking very badly. What do you recomend?

    1. I recommend using coconut oil or Olive oil. Saturate your hair with either oil, let it stay in your hair for at least a few hours before washing away with warm water and sulfate free shampoo.

  14. I have a virgin hair but the hair keeps pulling and breaking each time I wash, plait or comb it. Pls what do you suggest I do

    1. Hi Sara!
I would switch to a moisturizing sulfate free shampoo like Loreal. Next, ALWAYS use a conditioner when washing your hair. Wash your hair when it feels dry so you can moisturize. Try a leave in oil treatment like warm olive oil. Soak your hair for at least a few hours before rinsing. The olive oil treatment gives you hair elasticity, stops breakage.

      1. Hi, do you mean shampoo just conditioner ? Also any brand olive oil ? Thank you, Sandra

        1. Hi Sandra,
for dry hair, I recommend you to NOT use shampoo for a week, just conditioner. Eventually your hair will become oily and hair oils will redistribute and strengthen your hair. When you hair gets to this point, yes shampoo.

  15. I recently started a new birth control two weeks ago and it has been the best one I have tried yet but, I recently have noticed my hair is falling out and breaking really bad. I lose at least 300 strands or more a day. I naturally have thick, wavy, course hair that does tangle but it has gotten worse the past month. Is there anything you would recommend I do to help my hair? I don’t know what to do since I really like the birth control I’m on):

  16. I just had my hair rebond 1 week ago, march 17, i noticed that my hair is breaking and falling. Ive read about the olive oil,how many times in a week should i apply it? My hair’strands are very thin.

  17. Rebecca Lynn Mcginnis

I’m so happy to see these tips I’ve always had very healthy hair down past my waist Very thick, COURSE, shiny and all around just health. For the last 2 two years my hair has been falling out terribly. Now I have places on the sides that are two inches in length!!! I wish I would have thought to simply Google it I’m going to do this as soon as I’m finished with this here Just wanted to ask if it would help significantly to sit under a dryer with the olive oil on and if so, should I use a cap or towel or what on my head? Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Rebecca,
I’m sorry to hear about your hair. You could use a shower cap and wrap hot towels on your head. I wouldn’t recommend using a hair dryer, you don’t want to burn or damage the hair.
      Jen

  18. Hi, I have naturally curly hair and I recently got my hair bleach and dye purple. I didn’t get the root bleach but, it’s shedding and sometimes it comes from the root. Can you offer any advice because I want to stop the shedding.

    1. Sounds like your hair is very dry. I would moisturize often with a conditioner for damaged hair.
Your hair does naturally shed about 50 to 1 hundred hairs per day. If you skip brushing your hair for a day it could seem like you’re shedding too much but you’re not.
      Jen

  19. Hi! I’m 16 and bleached my hair about a year or two ago then let it grow out, I bleached it again early this school year and experienced nothing out of the ordinary, now about a week ago I noticed rapid hair loss nothing like chunks.. Just a lot, I switch shampoos all the time and used to blow dry my hair and flat iron it, it was healthy til now and still seems to he but is coming off at the roots.. I changed my part recently as well but am not flat ironing as much and being note careful when I brush… Any other suggestions? I’m using coconut oil now actually lol

    1. I would not bleach over the bleached areas. Perhaps the bleach was left on too long or made too potent. You need proteins and moisture. Try to use less shampoo and more conditioner. Also be gentle with your hair. Don’t brush to too harshly.
      Jen

  20. I used a deep conditioning treatment called african pride olive miracle deep conditioning and my hair is falling out what should i do

  21. Hi. I have dyed my hair and the hair seems very dry and falling out more than usual. I am doing your olive oil treatment but how long till I can apply another dye safely as it didn’t take properly on the ends just so I can even it out and then not dye for a while and nourish.

    1. Hi Samantha,
I would wait at least two weeks before dying it again. You want your hair to feel soft and stop breaking before you do.Keep doing the olive oil treatments.
      Jen

  22. hiya, i hda bby ovr a year ago n my hair ws cumin out by tge hand fuls i fot ds ws normal i also hv 2ball patches at both sides. a year on nw n my hair is so brittle am terrifued 2evn wash it. is there anything you could recommend wen i wash it, ders jst ak these bits stickn out evrywer its freaky lukn. i dont dye my hair n bearly blow dry or straiting it. i ws gtn shampoos for hair loss. but i dnt fnk am losing it i fink its more breakage if dat makes sense. its so fine n brittle its rekky geting me dwn bn to docs got blood done n evrythi gs fine. could you please tel me wot i cn di av hd enuff. thanks very much. x

  23. I just read everything on here. Im picking up olive oil and sulfate free shampoo tomorrow. My hair is long, i switched hair coloring brands to a lighter color and its breaking off in long strands in hand fulls. I’m afraid to wash it. Thank you for the info. I had forgotten about the olive oil treatments, I use to do those when I was younger. Thanks again, Linda

  24. Hi! Started to notice some breakage from my hair dyeing and constant use of curling iron, flat iron. I put the olive oil on, but do I wash it with shampoo then olive oil for three hours then wash with shampoo and conditioner? I just did the rinse with warm water then rinse out with warm water. Not sure I got all the dirt out or I just sealed it all in w/olive oil??

    1. Hi Tonya,
You have to stop using a flat iron. You could also be using it on too high of a setting. I know when I first got a flat iron ten years ago, it made my hair shorter and I never cut my hair. My friend’s were like…”did you cut your hair?” I would use it the most on the front sides or my face and that length became shortened. I looked like I had layered hair around my face lol. After I stopped flat ironing and blog drying my hair got deathly again very fast. Don’t bother with the olive oil unless you stop applying damaging heat to your hair. When you do, apply olive oil and saturate your hair from tip to root. Leave on a few hours and apply conditioner to wash it out of your hair. Shampoo strips your hair of protective oils. Use sparingly! XO

  25. My hair had falling out after I used a silver shampoo. Since my hair has been shedding far too much and it’s thinned badly. It’s almost came all out round my hair line. Doctor said it’s hormones. Im really freaking out as I’m trying everything and it ain’t stopping. My hair feels so fine and fluffy. Has anyone had this experience

    1. Hi Lisa,
If your doctor says it’s hormone related, they’re correct. Hormones from birth control pills, pregnancy, right after pregnancy, even drinking milk and meat that have hormones are the worst on your hair. Take that into consideration. Hugs.
      Jen

      1. Thanks Jen. I’ve ended up losing mostly all my hair now. It’s really thinned all over sides and nape of neck. I’ve decided to go and get bloods done. So I’m hoping something comes up so I can get things sorted. I must say losing my hair so quickly has really took it out of me.

        1. Hi my bloods came back low ferritin. Sitting at 18. Tablets are taking so long to reduce hair loss. My hair is almost falling out 60 percent. Any advice on how I can also get ferritin increased x

  26. Hi!
I’m a 13 years old girl and i have the worst hairfall EVER. I eat fruits, meat and veggies, drink plenty of water and i also exersice 3 times in a week. I get 9 hours of sleep and i dont have any stress or illness too! I use loreal 5in1 shampoo. I oil my hair twice a week with almond oil but still my hairfall doesn’t stop. I have extreamly thin hair what should i do? Take vitamin pills? Change shampoo? Eat more? Dont brush them? Please help me out..:(

    1. If you’re only 13, I would check whether you’re underweight and iron deficient, perhaps anemic?
Perhaps if it’s a lot of hair, I would ask your parents to take you to the Dr.

      1. Hi jen I spoke to you a while back about my hair loss. It turned out my ferritin was low and sitting at 18. It’s still coming out really quick and I now have hardly any hair. I’m looking for any advice to get my ferritin increased as the tablets take a while. I go abroad I’m 5 weeks so hoping it will slow down by then and I’ll hope still have hair. Lisa

  27. Hi Jen, I have extremely hair problems: dry, breakage, fall out a lot anytime I comb it or wash it, I’m tired. I was going to cut it but when I read your advice give me hope again. I want health, strong long hair. I’m going to start doing olive oil and egg treatment , how often can I use both treatment? Same day or separate day? And for my hair grow what products and hair styles do you suggest and how to use them? I’m black and I have light curly hair. Thannk you very much

    1. I would condition my hair with olive oil at least twice a week. Only use shampoo once a week. Also, keep your hair in a loose bun and add a tiny bit of coconut oil before you tie your hair back to keep it hydrated but not too greasy. It’s important to keep your hair hydrated. Dry hair breaks. Be gentle when combing with a wide tooth comb. Use a boar bristle brush when it’s dry to distribute your hair oils.
      Jen

  28. Hi. I used to dye and bleach and perm and straighten my hair back them. and now it is chemically damaged. my scalp is oily but my hair is dry. and also my hair is falling out so bad. my hair is thinning. what should i do. can u suggest shampoo or ways to treat my hair:(

  29. Hi Jen, I’m a 17 y/o girl and I just got my hair dyed a week ago without bleaching (my third dye in 2 years). In the previous times I never had a problem but now my hair is breaking off (from near the top) in like 5 – 10 strands. At first, it was worse, but now it has lessened a bit but I’m really scared about what will happen to my hair.
How long will it take for the olive oil to actually stop or lessen the breakage even more?
